Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that in ancient Jedi history the color of a lightsaber had a special meaning? Originally blue lightsabers were used by the warrior-like Guardians, green was used by Jedi who focused on politics and diplomacy, and yellow was for Sentinels who worked in areas not focused on the Force. Eventually however Jedi were able to choose the color of the sabers and the choices they used expanded to purple, red, white, yellow-green, and even black. Lightsabers get their color from the special stone used to make it called a Kyber crystal.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that there are two species of Dandelions and they are native to Europe, Asia, and the Americas? Even though they are weeds, all parts of a dandelion are edible and are used in medicines in different places around the world. Some ways to recognize a dandelion is by its bright yellow flower, sharp looking leaves, and white parachute like seeds. Dandelions can live 5 to 10 years and grow using a taproot which makes them really hard to get rid of once they start to grow in your yard.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that the month of May might be named after the Roman Goddess of growing plants, Maia? In the old Roman calendar, May was the third month of the year and like today is a spring month in the Northern Hemisphere. However, if you go to the Southern Hemisphere, May is a fall month so instead of plants growing they are starting to die before winter comes. May is the only month on the calendar that does not begin or end on the same day of the week as any other month. Emerald is the birthstone of May as it is a symbol for rebirth.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that the first zipper as we know it was created in 1913. An earlier version was invented in 1851 but was never really used. Zippers were originally called Separable Fasteners and were created by an electrical engineer named Gideon Sundback. A zipper is made of two sets of teeth that are linked together or separated by the pullable part. Zippers can be made out of both plastic and metal and can come in pretty much every color. Before the zipper most clothing relied on buttons, tied lace, or was made not to need to be joined together.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that we throw away about ⅓ of the food we make? When we throw away food that we don’t eat it ends up wasting a lot of resources. We have to use water to grow plants and food for animals. We need to use gasoline to transport food from farms and factories to store shelves. We need to use electricity to store and display food in stores. Once wasted food gets to the landfill, it rots and creates harmful chemicals and gasses that can damage our water and air.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that the first telephone was created by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876? The first conversation ever had on a phone was between Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson and what was said was, “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.” About a year after first showing off this invention, the first telephone was installed in the White House. The first mobile, or cell, phone was released in 1983 and was the DynaTAC 8000x which was about as big as a shoe. Now there are almost 10 billion phones around the world which means there are more phones than people.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the 5th biggest planet? Earth was formed about 4.5 billion years ago and is the only planet we know of in our solar system that has water and life on it. The Earth revolves completely around the Sun about every 365 days which is what makes a year. The Earth has seasons because it is on a tilt of about 23.4 degrees. Finally, although we think the Earth is pretty big, one million of them would fit inside of our sun.

Last week on April 14th we had the privilege and honor of hosting our grandparents for Grandparents' Day at the elementary school. If you are interested in volunteering with your student’s class we are still accepting volunteer forms in the office. You can stop by at anytime to get a form to complete. We will add any interested volunteers to our buildings list for potential involvement throughout the remainder of the year.
Our parents club is always looking for more participation. If you are interesting in learning more about what they do or about joining, please check out the following link.Parent’s Club link(https://www.facebook.com/groups/1455037061388924)
Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that wolves live in packs of between 6 and 8 animals? Wolves are carnivores that can smell 100 times better than humans. A wolf’s howl can be heard up to 10 miles away. In the wild, wolves can live up to 8 years and weigh up to 175 pounds.
Reminder! If your student will not be attending school for the day, please make sure you call the office and let us know. Please call us by 9am each day your student is absent. (A ClassDojo message is not enough since those sometimes go unread until later in the day).
We all at BHES are so happy to see everyone come to school each day. Myself and all the teachers care about you all and want to make every day as awesome as we can. We're here to help you have fun, to learn, and to grow. We're here to help you be safe, be healthy, and be happy.

Good morning
We are so excited to start day 149
Today is Thursday April 20th- Today is National North Carolina Day, National Hanging Out Day, National Banana Day, and National Garlic Day
Our Character Counts pillar for April is Responsibility. A responsible student has self-discipline. This means we control our own actions and think about our actions before doing something so we do not have a negative impact on another person.
The Village of Bismarck had an issue with our water yesterday and our schools have been affected. We are currently under a boil order, so students will not be able to use our water fountains. The school district will be providing bottled water to students but they are also being encouraged to bring their own water bottles if possible. Elementary lunches will not be impacted at this time.
Camp Invention will be back at Bismarck Henning Junior High June 26-30 and we are so excited! Camp runs from 9:00-3:30 daily (with an option for extended care). It is a full week of hands-on experiences in science and engineering for students entering 1st through 6th grade. Check out this link for more information and to register! You can also contact Mrs. Carpenter at acarpenter@bismarck.k12.il.us with any questions. See you there!
We will be holding our annual Laura K. Girton Fun Run on May 12th. Families will be welcome to come watch this event to cheer on their student’s effort. If you are interested in ordering your student or yourself a t-shirt, check out the following link. https://funrun.itemorder.com/
The winning class for our Spirit Stick and for meeting expectations for arrival in the gym during the morning was Mrs. Powell’s class.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that the state flower of Illinois is the common blue violet? In 1907 Illinois schoolchildren votes to make the violet the state flower over other options such as the wild rose and goldenrod. There are eight different species of violet in Illinois with the most common being dooryard violet. Violets are found growing on the prairie, on lawns, in woods, and in wetlands.
