Last Friday, the Bismarck Women's Club decorated the front of the elementary school to help spread awareness of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. They put out signage and pinwheels to mark April as the month to recognize this issue.

Last week on April 14th we had the privilege and honor of hosting our grandparents for Grandparents' Day at the elementary school. It was great to see so many children and adults get excited about spending time together and sharing their memories. Mrs. Foster did an amazing job organizing and running this event in the gym. Mr. Hibbets worked on students learning song to sing to their families. Mrs. Ross help prepare and distribute materials for students and their grandparents. Thank you everyone who was able to attend and make Grandparents' Day an special event.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know the state bird of Illinois is the Cardinal? The male Cardinal is easy to recognize because he is bright red while the female does a better job of camouflage since she is shaded in brown. Cardinals do not migrate when the weather starts getting colder, so you can see them all year round. Cardinals only live in the eastern part of the United States which means that most people who live west of the Rocky Mountains have not seen one. Both males and female Cardinals sing and can learn up to 24 different songs to communicate with each other.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that average elementary school student needs between 9 and 11 hours of sleep every night? We often hear that people need a good 8 hours of sleep, but that’s really only for adults who are all done growing and developing. Not getting enough sleep obviously makes you more tired but can also make people cranky and clumsy. If you keep missing sleep, you will start having more trouble doing normal things throughout your day because your brain cannot concentrate on all the things your body needs. One of the biggest distractions that causes people to miss sleep is having constant access to the internet.

I had the privilege of recognizing two students at the Illinois Principal Association's annual Student Recognition Ceremony on Thursday March 30th. Each year I get the chance to honor two fourth graders before they move to the Junior High for be great examples of citizenship, caring, respect, trustworthiness, fairness, and responsibility. This year I was honored to take Isla Kuemmerle and Wyatt Stahl with me to recognize their accomplishments at BHES.

On Friday March 31st, we celebrated our PreK, Kindergarten, and First grade students at Fuzzy Friday. We recognized students who displayed pillars of character that include citizenship, caring, respect, trustworthiness, fairness, and responsibility. Teachers played blindfolded bowling. Students played Moving on Up with a stack of cups. Mrs. Nixon's class won the Chowhall Challenge. Miss Dawson's class is being visited by Colby. Mrs. Gritton's class won the Spirit Stick. So glad we get to take time out each month to recognize our awesome students.
