As you know, school has been cancelled across the state for 2 weeks and we will be transitioning into E-Learning. To facilitate learning from March 30 - April 7 (and maybe beyond), BHES feels it is important to offer you and your child some resources that will keep young minds active and give you some activities to keep your child engaged with. Please understand that this will be our plan for the time frame listed above. We may make changes if the State of Illinois extends our current closure.
E-learning will look different in each of the Bismarck-Henning CUSD #1 school buildings. For the elementary school, our staff has elected to offer Choice Boards for students. Similar in design to a BINGO board, students will select activities to complete from each of the 5 subject categories - Math, Reading, Writing, Science/Social Studies, and Specials (PE, Music, Library). At this point, we would like to see our students able to complete four total activities from the different options during this 7 day closure. We encourage you to add variety - completing activities across the subject categories. If students are able (with parent permission), completed activities can be shared in Class Dojo or via email to the child’s teacher.
With the Choice Boards, some of the activities are game-based, while others practice reading and reflecting. Some of the activities offered are online pieces, but alternative options are available. BHES teachers have also put together online resource links for enrichment or as alternatives if a specific activity isn’t available This is not homework. The materials and the e-learning are meant solely to benefit you and your child. BHES wants our students to continue learning during this extended break and feel that the resources we have put together will help your child stay on track for now and will also enhance future learning.
Online Distribution: Parents and students may access the Choice Board materials through online links. Choice boards can be found on the school website under documents. www.bismarck.k12.il.us Parents signed up with the Teacherease system will also receive a communication letter with links to the materials. And, we are asking teachers to post the choice board in Dojo. By Monday, March 30, there will be physical copies of the choice board located in front of the school inside of the Eagle Library Book Box. Change is difficult for everyone. We know that families are experiencing so much change right now. Our goal at BHES is to showcase through the Choice Boards that learning can occur both in the classroom and outside of the classroom (at home). We hope that your family is able to take time to enjoy these moments together and build upon learning through real life experiences.
